Using FitOverlay with CapCut

Learn how to overlay your ride metrics onto your footage using CapCut on desktop and mobile.

CapCut Desktop

The desktop app gives you a full multi-track timeline, making it the most straightforward way to composite your overlay. It also supports the Blend Mode feature needed to remove the black background from your metrics video.

1

Add your ride footage to the timeline
Import your action camera footage and place it on the main video track

2

Add the metrics video as an overlay track
Drag the FitOverlay video onto the track above your footage

3

Select the overlay clip
Click the metrics video on the timeline to select it

4

Open the Blend Mode panel
In the properties panel on the right, find the "Blend mode" dropdown under the Basic section

5

Set Blend Mode to "Screen"
Change the blend mode from "Normal" to "Screen" to make the black background invisible

How it works

The "Screen" blend mode makes all black pixels transparent while keeping bright elements visible. This leaves only the metrics graphics overlaid on your ride footage. You can reposition or scale the overlay in the preview window and adjust opacity if needed.

CapCut Mobile

The mobile app also supports blend modes, so you can composite your overlay directly on your phone. The workflow is slightly different since the mobile app uses an "Overlay" system instead of a multi-track timeline.

1

Create a new project with your ride footage
Open CapCut, tap New Project, and select your action camera video

2

Tap "Overlay" and add the metrics video
In the bottom toolbar, tap Overlay, then Add overlay, and select the FitOverlay video

3

Position and resize the overlay
Drag to reposition and pinch to resize the overlay on the preview screen

4

Tap "Blend" in the toolbar
With the overlay clip selected, scroll through the bottom toolbar and tap Blend

5

Select "Screen"
Choose Screen from the list of blend modes to remove the black background

Tip

You can also adjust the opacity slider after applying the Screen blend mode to fine-tune how prominent the metrics appear over your footage. Drag the edges of the overlay clip on the timeline to match its duration to your video.
